About the Project
City Blues is Kellwood's denim brand launch, brought to life through a dual approach designed to balance high-volume ecommerce needs with editorial storytelling. The foundation of the launch was an ecomm shoot that swapped the traditional blank backdrop for light production design, using textured flats and simple set pieces to add a sense of place while still keeping the SKUs clear and shop-ready.
To complement the studio work, we captured a select set of editorial looks around New York City, using real streets and locations to deliver the city energy the collection is inspired by. The editorial concept was structured as three cinematic mini stories, each with its own tone and pace, and each built to highlight the collection through movement, mood, and environment.
Why This Exists
Denim is a product category where context matters. A blank background can show fit, but it cannot communicate identity. This launch was built to make City Blues feel like it belongs to a world. The ecomm sets created a scalable system that adds character and spontaneity, while still allowing the imagery to be transferred to clean retailer backgrounds when needed.
The editorial layer exists to do what ecommerce cannot. It translates the collection's city inspiration into lived-in moments, using cinematic references and a strong sense of space to make the clothes feel worn in real life, not displayed in a void.
